About "The Fungal, Lichen and Plant Collections at the Herbarium Marburgense"

The Collections

The Fungal, Lichen and Plant Collections at the Herbarium Marburgense (MB) comprises more than 340,000 herbarium specimens, 90,000 of these being fungi and lichens. The core of the lichen collection are the specimens brought together by Aino Henssen. This collection includes the type material of a number of lichens described by her and is originating from various locations all over the world. Herbert Alfred McCullough (1914–xx) deposited his collection of lichens from Alabama at Herbarium Marburgense. An other important collection is that of hypogeous fungi from Rudoph Hesse (1844–1912) covering major parts of the material studied in his monograph "Die Hypogäen Deutschlands" (1890–1894). Recent fungal collections originate from staff activities in Central Europe, Kenya, Costa Rica, Macedonia, Turkmenistan and Yunnan (SW-China). The agarics are in the focus of current projects, especially the genera Mycena and Tricholoma.

The plant collections comprise another 250,000 herbarium specimens originating from the 19th century. They were mainly collected in Marburg and surrounding regions of Hessen-Nassau. The most important collector was Albert Wigand (1821–1886).

The Data Project and Service

The data project "The Fungal, Lichen and Plant Collections at MB" was established by Karl-Heinz Rexer. It is work in progress with the aim to make accessible the specimens collected by Aino Henssen and those specimens which are currently subject of scientific or curatorial activities on-site. "The Fungal, Lichen and Plant Collections at MB" uses Diversity Workbench components. The taxonomy and nomenclature follows Catalogue of Life, Index Fungorum, LIAS names and MycoBank, respectively.

Currently the data project "The Fungal, Lichen and Plant Collections at MB" is set up without any support from external funding agencies. It is maintained and expanded by staff members of the Philipps-University Marburg, Faculty of Biology. Notices of errors of any kind are much appreciated by the editorial staff here.
